Obituary

Brock, Maurice on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, of Philadelphia, Maurice (his family called him Linwood), but Poppy was his favorite name, passed away at the age of 89 (one week shy of his 64th wedding anniversary).  He is survived by his devoted wife, Janet E. (nee Knapp), loving father of Christine  J. (Carmen) Scotese, Phyllis L., Douglas M. (Carol) and the late Joyce L. (Walter) Smilowski.  He cherished his ten grandchildren-Phillip (Coleene) Brock, Janet (Kurt) Smith, Kyle Scotese, Amanda Brock (Michael Saba), Tyler (Ashley) Brock, Evan Scotese, Derek Smilowski (Felix Valdez), Cameron (Angela) Scotese, Haley Scotese and Alec Smilowski.  He was over the moon with his Great Grandchildren.  Mr. Brock is also survived by his brother Garland (Fannie) Brock of Beulaville, North Carolina.  He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. Billy (William) and Miss Lula (nee Miller) Brock, and by his siblings Melvin Brock (Mildred), Alma (Robert) Simmons, Elwood (Eva) Brock, Ervin (Gertrude) Brock, Thurman (Nancy) Brock, Mavis (Davey) Bell and Ressie Carlton (R.C.) Brock.  He will be missed by his “Philadelphia” niece Linda (Ronald) Houdeshel, their daughters Jean Egeland and Shana Eckert (Edward) and their families.  Mr. Brock also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and loving friends.

Poppy was born on the family farm in Beulaville, North Carolina, the middle of 9 children, on September 11, 1930.  After he left the family farm, he joined the United States Army and one of his last assignments had him stationed in Philadelphia, at Rising Sun and Olney Avenues.  He was introduced to Janet, through mutual friends, and they married in 1956.  They made their home in Philadelphia, but he was never far from his southern roots and still had his North Carolina accent until his passing.  We laughed at the way he said Vinegar, Pillow, and Aerial, and the way he pronounced some of the grandchildren’s names.  Each of us was his “favorite”, especially when we were alone with him.  Each of us had time alone with him the last two weeks and boy did we hear stories.  Thank you, Holy Redeemer Hospice, for all your help the last two weeks.
